The Year 1 Teachers at Royal Dubai School are using Google Earth next week. Google Earth gets better all the time, producing some stunning visuals as well as being an excellent learning tool - there are many ways in which to use Google Earth in the classroom.
This post gets you started if you haven't used Google Earth before. Google have produced some excellent tutorials that are short and easy to understand. Have a good look at the following 6 links ... it's a good place to start.
- 1. Street View
- 2. Navigation
- 3. Searching for Places
- 4. Placemarks and Tours
- 5. Exploring Mars, Moon and Sky
- 6. Historical Imagery
This isn't the end of the story ...
Google have produced an excellent app version of Google Earth which is a free download to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. If you teach at Royal Dubai School, it is already on the iPod Touches. They can be booked out for your class from the Library - see Emma McKee. I would also suggest that you get one from Emma and take it home for the weekend and PLAY with it. See what it can do and think about how the students might individually access their learning. Much better than having it only on an IWB. You will be amazed at how much they learn and what they find out. You will also be amazed with the ones who go home and have mum and dad download it (if they haven’t already) onto their iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads and carry on learning and discovering new things ... BRILLIANT!
