The GOOGLE DRIVE ... very EXCITING!

Teaching Digital Learning to teachers is certainly a pleasure.  However, yesterday at GEMS Royal Dubai School it was different - it had to be one of those moments that just STAND OUT.

A few weeks ago I started coaching Debbie Simpson.  How to use cloud services like DropBox and the Google Drive have been the theme of the term.  Debbie came to coaching saying she needed lots of help and was 'behind with the digital stuff'.  Well one thing is for certain, Debbie is not lacking in enthusiasm, nor is she lacking in the right mindset and attitude.

Two weeks ago we started on the Google Drive.  Debbie went away determined to get into it. Well she did that for sure and next thing she had the whole year group doing the same task that she had set up for her class.  It didn't stop there - Debbie started coming back to me and showing me new things she had found that could be done with the Google Drive - FANTASTIC - I was learning from her!  The ultimate happened when her children showed her things they found they could do on the Google Drive. Debbie, being the great C21 teacher just let the children go with what they were finding. They were using the resource function and collaborating real time on the Google Drive as they worked.

Its about this time I walked into the room and these children and their teacher couldn't wait to show me what they were doing. It was a fantastic atmosphere in the room!  Everyone was really buzzing.  They showed me what they had done. I asked the children if one or two might like to make a screencast about how to use the Google Drive, so that the other teachers in the school could learn from they had found?  I kid you not - every hand went up!

So here it is. A tutorial on how to use the Google Drive by Harry Gemlik (Year 6DS GEMS Royal Dubai School).  Harry had Charlotte Bullivant working with him in the background to show how they could collaborate during the screencast.

This is C21 Teaching and Learning:
  • Children owning their own learning
  • Personalised independent learning
  • The teacher allowing learning to take place
  • The teacher acts as facilitator and guide
  • The children teach the teacher new things they have discovered
  • The teacher allows it to happen.

This is OUTSTANDING!
Well done Year 6
Well done Harry and Charlotte
Well done Debbie!

  1. Dear Harry and Charlotte

Thank you for sharing your learning.

Your screencast was very clear and has inspired me to continue to teach myself 'how to use Google Drive', so that I can introduce this at my school too.

    Keep up the good work!
