Whilst contemplating how to incorporate iPads into a numeracy lesson, I was directed towards a free app called Educreations. In effect this app is like a mini-whiteboard and enables children to explain their methods of working. You can create an animated lesson using pictures, drawings and text. In Year 4, we have used the app to allow children to teach one another particular concepts and to solve problems. Instead of recording workings in a book, children had the opportunity to be more creative and combine verbal reasoning in their written methods.
In my view, this app is a wonderful resource and can be used across the whole curriculum. For example, in Year 4, we are going to use Educreation to make storymaps in Literacy. Children could also use the app to make presentations in Topic rather than relying on a mundane powerpoint. In addition to this, pupils seem much more engaged in their learning which is one of the many benefits of using this technology in the classroom.
.
If you are interested in using this app, then you can either download it for free or use one of the RDS iPads which has the app installed.
